If you want to laugh, learn, and find out “dirty little secrets” all about “really good moms”, you HAVE to read Amy Nobile and Trisha Ashworth’s book, I was a Really Good Mom Before I had Kids. My husband bought me this book when it first came out as a Mother’s Day gift years ago and I loved it then and more so now after speaking with Amy!

Trisha and Amy have known each other for about 14 years. They became fast friends and found themselves moving to the Bay Area and having children around the same time. They were true girlfriends… fun and brutally honest with one another. Amy would call Trisha during all hours of the night and morning complaining about having mastitis 5 TIMES!!! ( My breasts ached when she said that…)

They found that in their moms groups, the moms had selective memories about pregnancy and those early baby moments. They wanted to communicate the specific challenges facing our moms today. So… they began to ask other moms. First organically, in their own circles.. family , friends, friends of friends of friends. Soon, they found certain themes… feeling guilty all the time, inability to say no (Michelle and I were nodding emphatically by this point), and not being able to take consistent alone time. There was no “scientific method” to this interviewing process. It was the good ol’ fashioned way of the phone tree… phone calls and great insightful conversation!

At first, they found it rather difficult for moms to open up and really talk. The first 22 minutes was more of a resume and all sunshine. There was a pattern of all happiness and as Amy said that they continuously reported that they were “so lucky”. Then, moms slowly began to open up. They began to be honest and started sharing over the phone after about 45 minutes their dirty laundry. How challenging it is to be a mom today. Their stories were funny, real, and honest. I laughed on several occasions.

Sprinkled throughout the book are the “Dirty Little Secrets” that Amy and Trisha asked their moms. It was the last question they asked and moms all shared. Some of the themes centered around dinner time, husbands, and sex. (Hmmmm… intriguing, isn’t it? This was my favorite parts of the book!!! ) So, this was the fuel for their second book which is out, ” Dirty Little Secrets from otherwise perfect moms”. You can get both on Amazon and Target as well! I have both! Love the cover, love the stories and how both are easy to read and is consumable in small chunks. You don’t have to read either from cover to cover…

They are also writing their 3rd book about your relationship with your hubby after having children. Lots of testosterone testimonials in this one! I think I may have my own hubby contribute (ANONYMOUSLY, of course) to this one! More information the better. Amy said that this one gives us a better perspective on our husbands and will help us to understand how they think and how much pressure they feel as well. We all need this, don’t you think? There are not enough books out there about learning how our other half thinks.

So Moms! I strongly encourage you to read both books. Amy and Trisha are about as real as moms can get and have given us an incredible resource for looking at moms with a healthy dose of humor as well as reality. Pay attention to the chapter on 10 Easy Steps for Guilt Free Mothering.

If you are looking for a gift for a Mom who has everything, give her the books by Amy Nobile and Trisha Ashworth. It’s fun and easy to share! Happy Reading! We’d love to hear from you about what you thought!
