Which book do you choose when you want to start the potty training phase for your child? We have the answer for you! This week, we have Sara Au ( fantastic mom, friend, and journalist) with us to talk with us about her book, Stress Free Potty Training written by her and Dr. Pete Stavinoha, a clinical neuropsychologist who practices at the Children’s Medical Center in Dallas. Out of all the books, out there on this challenging topic, I recommend this as a must have in your parenting library.
One of the coolest things about the book is that it is focuses on your child’s personality or temperment. Sara and Dr. Pete discuss different ways to tackle potty training based on your child’s specific personality/temperment. There are 5 that they write about:
- Sensory Child
- Internalizing Child
- Goal Directed Child
- Strong Willed Child
- Impulsive Child
Of course, you child may be a combination of two or three, or he may be categorized under one specific temperment. If you’re not sure, they have a very easy to take quiz for you to try to narrow down what kind of child you have. Then, after you’ve identified the correct temperment, the book proceeds with suggestions you will find so helpful in starting or continuing with potty training. As you read, you will discover tools that resonate with your child.
One of my favorite aspects of this book is the “Talking With Your Child” sections of the book. Sara and Dr. Pete give you the exact phrases, words, ideas to use when talking with your child when potty training. Sometimes, we don’t know what to say or how to say it… well, now you don’t have to worry. They have thought of everything!!!
Sara shares with us that the publisher, AMACON Books approached her about doing a potty training book that was different than what was already on the bookstore’s shelves. With her incredible experience as a parenting writer for various magazines and finding Dr. Pete, she researcshed this field and found some great studies/research that she included in the book. When you read this book, it’s almost as if you have Sara and Dr. Pete right there at your kitchen table giving you “inside tips” on what to do next. It’s great!
Michelle, Sara and I have a fun time sharing our own potty training experiences with our own children! Sara also emphasizes that there is no “set age” when your child should be potty trained. It depends on your child and her readiness. If you are concerned, by all means, check with your pediatrician!
We had so much to talk with Sara about that we are bringing her back next week to continue our potty training discussion. Be sure to listen next week where we talk about parents’ most common mistakes when they start potty training their children. Hmmmm…. how many did I do?!
Thanks for listening!
